Business trips are usually pretty great. You get to get out the office, you can expense everything, no one is looking over your shoulder, and you can expense everything. Recently my work travel took me to New York City from San Francisco. I decided to book my room on Airbnb as to save my company a little money and try something new. Oh. My. God what a good idea.

The place I booked was in Brooklyn as I like the scene and a few of my high school buddies live the hood. When I got to my apartment, a three bedroom condo, I learned it was being rented by two other people as well. One girl was a traveler from Australia and the other girl was a traveler from Argentina. Yeah my business trip just turned into a Three’s Company vacation with an Aussie girl and an Argentinian girl. And it was cheaper!

All I have to say is the next five days were an absolute blast. I think. It’s kind of a blur. I had two adventurers to hang with, make breakfast, go to bars, explore the city, play drinking games, and wake up with headaches. The only thing that suffered was my work. Oh well.

Live swimming lobsters, booze, a hot dog cooker, Pringles, and used panties are all things sold in vending machines apparently. Really puts your office machine with the Cheetos to shame, huh?

Each week I’m on a show called Generation X3 hosted by John C. Dvorak. This week I thought we should talk about some of the greatest vending machines around the world. The live lobster tank takes the gold. Have a look:

How awesome is Pandora and Spotify and MOG and the like? Sitting at a desk for eight hours a day has gone from hell to slightly less-than-hell by the endless stream of music available at the click of the mouse. But the problem with streaming music is nobody makes any money streaming music. Pandora is forecast to lose money for at least another year and Spotify keeps financials private.

Slacker Radio CEO Jim Cady recently pointed out that the current business model is lost in the mud. Artists are earning between $0.001 and $0.004 cents per stream. At that rate it would take about 1,000,000 song streams for a band to make $1,000. Cady just spoke with Fast Company on the topic:
If an artist is making less than a penny per stream, is that a sustainable business model?

JC: Well, I think it really depends on who that artist is. I think it’s going to be different for each one of them depending on how popular they are, how many albums they can actually sell, or depending on live performances.

Outside of merchandize, concerts, and 360 deals then. Just in terms of selling music, is that a sustainable model?

JC: I don’t know. You can’t look at it independently. You’d have to look at it as a full 360 deal.

So the take away is love your streaming music service while it’s free and here, and bands need to start selling more t-shirts.

Here’s a simple prank with a great ratio of laughter to energy applied. First find two co-workers that sit next to each other, or at least in close proximity, and are easy targets. The first and only step goes like this:

Switch their phone cables so every time someone calls they have the wrong number. Sit back and laugh at the confusion on each and every call. This prank works especially well for secretaries and sales people.

If you really want to go big, make some phoney phone calls to them just to drill it in.
